Isolationism is a political philosophy with deep roots in American history, calling for the United States to stay out of foreign conflicts. Isolationists can include pacifists opposed to war in general, but in the 1930s and 1940s many isolationists were sympathetic to Nazi Germany.
This interwar period was the most antisemitic in United States history, and German theories of racial superiority and Aryan rights appealed to many Americans. The 800,000 members of one prominent isolationist group, the America First Committee, echoed Nazi propaganda and accused Jews of pushing the United States closer to war. America First campaigned against increasing immigration quotas for Jewish refugees. They were joined in this by other isolationist groups like the German-American Bund and the Christian Front, which was led by the antisemitic radio priest Father Charles Coughlin.
